The Daniel Veloric Lecture Series is a series of lectures sponsored through an AJC grant from the Daniel Veloric Foundation that explore the unique traits common to great leaders as diverse as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Menachem Begin.

Speaker Biographies:

Ben Jealous
Benjamin Todd Jealous is the former president and CEO of the NAACP. He stepped down from his post at the end of 2013. Ben has been a leader of successful state and local movements to ban the death penalty, outlaw racial profiling, defend voting rights, secure marriage equality, and free multiple wrongfully incarcerated people. Under his leadership, the NAACP grew to be the largest civil rights organization online and on mobile, experienced its first multi-year membership growth in 20 years, and became the largest community-based nonpartisan voter registration operation in the country.

Prior to leading the NAACP, he spent 15 years serving as a journalist and community organizer. While at Mississippi’s Jackson Advocate newspaper, his investigations were credited with exposing corruption at a state penitentiary and proving the innocence of a black farmer who was being framed for arson. A Rhodes Scholar, he has been named to the 40 under 40 lists of both Forbes and Time magazines. He is #1 on TheRoot.com’s 2013 list of black leaders under 45.

Jealous serves as an advisor for multiple tech startups that work to close gaps, particularly in the areas of financial inclusion, justice tech, and low wage work. He serves as a board member at Pigeonly and a board advisor at PayNearMe.

The Honorable Timothy K. Lewis
Former federal appeals judge Timothy K. Lewis is co-chair of Schnader's ADR Practice Group and serves as a mediator, arbitrator, settlement counselor, and trial and appellate practitioner. Judge Lewis is a past co-chair of Schnader's Appellate Practice Group.

Before entering private practice, Judge Lewis served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He was serving on the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania when President George H. W. Bush elevated him to the Court of Appeals in 1992. At the time of both appointments he was the youngest federal judge in the United States. Before being appointed to the federal bench, Judge Lewis served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania and as an Assistant District Attorney in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

As a federal judge, Judge Lewis tried, decided and authored opinions in all matters that came before the federal courts, particularly in the areas of employment disputes, class actions, intellectual property, and commercial and corporate disputes. As co-chair of Schnader’s ADR practice group, he has developed a national and international ADR practice involving many of the world’s leading corporations. Judge Lewis also provides strategic counseling and conducts moot courts in various federal appellate matters in circuit courts throughout the country. Judge Lewis also handles federal and state criminal cases and corporate investigations.
